Internet applications

John Bokma has been writing software for the Internet for over 14 years. The first CGI programs were created on Silicon Graphics hardware running IRIX using either Perl or shell scripting (csh). Later also GNU/Linux was used in combination with the Apache HTTP server and the open source database MySQL. For Java related projects Jakarta / Tomcat, an open source servlet engine, was used.

Web Automation, RSS, and Crawling

More recent programs include web page, and newsfeed (RSS) generation software, and web robots (e.g. spiders, chatbots) mostly written in the Perl programming language.

Search Engine Optimization

John has also a lot of experience with SEO, meaning: optimizing your website for search engines like Google. For example his personal home page -- Hacking and Hiking in Mexico -- receives over 10,000 visitors a day, and has been at the top of the first SERP for perl programmer in Google for years.
